I've kept both the Eastern and Western sub-species of the American Painted Turtle as pets, and my opinion is that they are among the most beautiful and intelligent of chelonians. So the long-term impact in Japan may actually be positive rather than negative. And if the North American experience also applies in Japan, there are environments where Wood Turtles thrive but Painted Turtles don't.
